The city is the Church of Scotland's annual General Assembly venue. It is birthplace to national institutions such as the Scottish National Museum, the Scottish National Gallery and the National Library of Scotland.

It is the most ambitious large city in the United Kingdom, according to the Center for International Competitiveness.
