Six Sigma Training : Two Project Methodology

Six Sigma Training : Two Project Methodology

Methods of Six Sigma Training follow two project methodologies. These methodologies, are composed of five phases each under the headings - DMAIC & DMADV.

A. DMAIC is used for projects in order to improve, a business process and to cover business risks.

B. DMADV is used for projects in order to create new product or process designs.

A. DMAIC: Five phases of the DMAIC project methodology are detailed below:

(a) Define: It implies that we have to define the problem or the risk we have to remove the errors or faults of the business process. The voice of the customer is also to be  defined. It means that we have to take care of the needs of the customer regarding the kind and quality of the products. We have to define the project goals also very specifically under Lean Six Sigma Training.

(b) Measure: It implies to measure major aspects of the existing process and collect relevant data. The pros and cons of the current process are evaluated in regard to the inputs (investments) manufacturing and sales etc. The relevant data in respect of these elements of the business process is collected very carefully under Six Sigma methodology.

(c) Analyse: The collected data undergoes sharp analysis for investigation and verification of cause and effect relationships. All factors are considered to know the errors and defects of the business process. The root causes of the defects are also sought under the Six Sigma Training.

(d) Improve: It means to improve the existing process based upon data analysis using techniques to remove error or defects. The techniques include design of experiments, mistake proofing and to create a new, beneficial business process. It is to set up a new capability as directed by Six Sigma.

(e) Control: Six Sigma method controls the incoming business process defects and all corrections are made to ensure risk less process. The control system should be implemented in production, purchases, manufacturing, sales, statistical processes, work place etc. Continuous monitoring of the business process is also necessary, otherwise, there is every possibility of occurrence of risk. Before defining, if we recognise an error or problem, the methodology becomes RDMAIC where R stands for Recognise. In some companies and organisations RDMAIC methodology is used.

B. DMADV or DFSS methodology: - This methodology is used when new products one to be created or new process designs are prepared. DFSS means "Design for Six Sigma"

This methodology also consists of 5 phases (similar to DMAIC methodology. Explanation of the 5 phases is elaborated below:

(a) Define: - This phase of Six Sigma methodology stresses defining the designs of the products. The designs must be according to the needs or demands of the customers. The policy of the organisation should be kept in view to meet the competitive demand of the market.

(b) Measure: - Second stage of Six Sigma methodology emphasises the measurement and identification of TQM features. Total quality management is very important to create the quality products. Capabilities of the enterprise to manufacture products, manufacturing process and profit or losses are also measured and identified.

(c) Analyse: - Analyse phase of Six Sigma strategy deals with analysis of the design and to create new designs for the manufacture of quality items.

 (d) Design: - Depending upon the design analysis, Six Sigma methodology helps to prepare improved designs of the quality products. The new designs should be acceptable to the customers.

(e) Verify: - The product design is verified and is implemented in the business process.

Thus, the Six Sigma methodology helps to produce quality goods with best designs as per the demands of the customers for the maximum outputs.
