Six Sigma is an excellent quality control tool. It is a successor to the earlier quality control methods such as Kaizen and Total Quality Management which were very popular Japanese quality control tools till the 1980s. They were able to give a quality yield of 3 Sigma.   However, Motorola which used the Six Sigma techniques to reduce the variation in electronic manufacturing managed to stretch the process of quality control to Six Sigma which gave a near perfect yield of 99.999886 %. The process of Six Sigma from start to finish is controlled by another management tool called DMAIC. It is a very logical approach to problem solving. The defect is first defined. This requires study of feedback data received directly or indirectly from customers. Once the defect has been defined then they measure it viz how much is the defect percentage. Then analysis takes place to find out various options of solutions available and choosing the best of them. The best solution is then implemented and the new process is then controlled till the process improves and the new process is fully accepted by employees as well as customers.
