Luton

Luton is a large town, district and unitary area of Bedfordshire, situated in the south-east of England, but for administrative purposes in the east of England. It has a population of 214,109 and is one of the most populated cities without city status in the UK. The town is situated on the Lea River, about 50 km northwest of London. The foundation of the town dates back to the sixth century as a Saxon settlement on the Lea River, from which Luton derives his name. Local museums in Wardown Park and Stockwood Park discuss the history of Luton.

Economy

Traditionally, Luton's economy has centered on a number of different sectors, including automotive, manufacturing and milling. Today, however, Luton is heading towards a service-based economy, mainly in the retail and airport sectors, although there is still an emphasis on the city's light industry.

Education

Luton is one of Bedfordshire University's major locations. A large university campus is in the city center of Luton, with a smaller campus located on the edge of the city in Putteridge Bury, a former manor house in Victoria. The University's other main campus is located in Bedford. There are 98 educational institutions in Luton – seven nurseries, 56 primary schools,13 secondary schools, four new educational institutions and four other educational institutions.
